I just returned from a professional association meeting with other lawyers, and after the speakers concluded their presentation and people started leaving, I noticed that very few people greeted each other, chatted with each other, or even introduced themselves to others they didn’t know. To the contrary, a few of them seemed to go out of their way to respond to a greeting with a dirty look or a shrug of their shoulders. Everyone sort of drifted away. Considering that the local legal newspaper always carries articles on how lawyers can market themselves better, and enhance their practices by reaching out to others and participating in groups, I find this behavior to be strange, but not unusual for the East Coast.
